Ontario Building Code — quick guide

What a universal washroom needs to address.

This website summarizes key requirements in Ontario's 2024 Building Code accessibility provisions. It is a practical overview — not a substitute for project-specific drawings, permit review or advice from the applicable authority having jurisdiction.

Barrier-free pathThe universal washroom must be served by a barrier-free path of travel.
Room dimensionsNo internal wall dimension less than 1,700 mm; the layout must allow a 1,700 mm diameter wheelchair turning space.
Automatic doorWhere the door has a self-closing device, the Code requires a power door operator.
Water closet & grab barsThe toilet must meet accessible water-closet provisions, including required grab bars and transfer clearances.
Accessible lavatoryLavatory height, knee clearance, accessible faucets and accessory mounting must meet the applicable provisions.
Emergency callAn emergency call system with audible and visual signals inside and outside the washroom is required.
Adult change table spaceProvide a clear space at least 810 mm wide by 1,830 mm long; provide wall reinforcement where required for future installation.
Lighting & mirrorMotion-sensor controlled lighting and an accessible mirror are among the universal-washroom requirements.
Important: Ontario accessibility rules can change and project requirements can depend on occupancy, building type, scope of renovation and other applicable standards. Confirm the current Code and project requirements with the design professional/AHJ before ordering or installing.
